ResearchWire – Litigator’s Internet Resource Guide: Points in Dispute

Return to Library

(Archived January 1, 1998)

Then came pleas and rejoinders, rebutters, demurrers,
Such as Chitty would plough into Richard Roe’s furrows; —
Cross questions, and very cross answers, to suit —
So the gist of the case was the point in dispute.

— John Brainard, “Scire Facias” in Poems of John Brainard (1841)

Speaking of disputes, have you read about the Sun/Microsoft Java TM controversy? How about the class action lawsuit against Network Solutions, Inc., a domain name registration service? The McAfee/Symantec quarrel? What has been your source of information?

The newspaper? Television news? A neighbor?

How about a web site? But not just any web site — one that offers copies of official court documents …

As previously promised, this article introduces “Chapter Two” of the Litigator’s Internet Resource Guide published by Law Library Resource Xchange this Spring. Rules of Court, the first chapter, indexes official and unofficial Internet sources of federal, state, and local court rules. Now, Points In Dispute compiles and, as necessary, briefly annotates sites that offer pleadings and other court filings.

During my travels, I found various kinds of documents ranging from complaints to amicus briefs and from trial exhibits to courtroom transcripts. As with Rules of Court, I found no single source offering pointers to all or most of the documents. Yet hundreds of them exist in almost as many locations.

Again, the disorderly array evidences a need for indexes such as this one. Feel free to send me your ideas for additional litigation indexes as well as suggestions for documents/sites to include in this index. 1
