Subject: FBI Tracks ‘Anti-Tech Extremism’ Amid Growing AI Backlash

Leaked documents reveal that the FBI, DHS, and local intelligence fusion centers have created a new, unpublicized threat category termed “anti-tech violent extremism” to monitor growing public resistance against AI and data center infrastructure. Spurred by sweeping federal directives like National Security Presidential Memorandum 7, these security networks are tracking local town halls, public budget meetings, and environmental protests where citizens vocalize concerns over noise pollution and utility spikes.
Public friction over the rapid proliferation of artificial intelligence technology is shifting from local zoning boards straight into federal intelligence databases. As everyday citizens voice concerns over massive data centers consuming local utilities and shifting jobs, federal law enforcement agencies are establishing a quiet infrastructure to monitor a novel category of threat. More than 1,000 pages of unpublished reports obtained by WIRED pull back the curtain on a sweeping national effort to surveil what authorities call “anti-tech violent extremism.”
…
An overreaching umbrella – Authorities point to genuine criminal threats—such as the recent high-profile trial of extreme rationalist Ziz LaSota, whose cultlike anti-AI group faces multiple murder charges. On the other hand, civil liberties advocates worry the government’s dragnet is cast far too wide. Intelligence centers are actively monitoring nonviolent, constitutionally protected demonstrations. The list includes anti-Elon Musk “Tesla Takedown” rallies and standard local civic forums.

https://gizmodo.com/polymarket-cracks-down-on-vpn-users-as-legal-pressure-intensifies-in-dozens-of-countries-2000765379
Location is becoming a real obstacle, rather than a symbolic one, for users of prediction markets. Polymarket has started actively targeting users who rely on VPNs to get around its geoblocking rules. The platform now blocks certain IP addresses tied to VPN services and in some cases asks users to verify their identities, according to a report in The Information. These steps come as the company faces growing legal and regulatory pressure worldwide, including full-on bans in countries such as Spain and Indonesia. Meanwhile, VPN providers themselves are also facing increased regulatory pressure in places like Utah and the United Kingdom. Polymarket’s updated approach combines technical barriers with selective identity checks to stop users from dodging location restrictions. The company reportedly blocks known VPN IP ranges outright and flags accounts that show signs of evasion. Users with unusually large positions or those moving money in rapid, high-value cycles now receive requests to complete identity verification to satisfy anti-money laundering rules.
Both Binance and KuCoin drew heavy criticism and formal charges for letting Americans trade without required KYC and AML checks. Court documents show KuCoin knowingly allowed U.S. customers to operate without identity verification, advertised the lack of KYC as a feature, and took steps to hide their presence. The CFTC has also pointed to cases where Binance gave U.S. users guidance on using VPNs to avoid detection.
At the same time, some jurisdictions have begun exploring stricter rules on VPNs when people use them to bypass age-based limits on adult content and other forms of online regulation. The focus so far centers on shifting legal responsibility to app developers and website operators, forcing them to prevent unauthorized access by targeted groups. Critics, such as the Electronic Frontier Foundation, warn that this approach will push platforms toward requiring real-world identity verification for users, effectively ending anonymous internet access for many services.

https://gizmodo.com/apple-is-officially-coming-for-metas-privacy-invading-lunch-with-its-own-smart-glasses-in-late-2027-2000765491
While checking out of a recent medical appointment, I was suddenly horrified to realize the front desk receptionist I was speaking with had on a pair of Meta x Ray Ban smart glasses.
“Those aren’t filming, right” I asked, mentally pre-filing my HIPAA violation suit. She seemed surprised to even receive such a question, taking a moment to clock that I was referring to the recording device on her face that has been embroiled in controversies. No, she assured me, once it clicked, the camera wasn’t on. She was only using them to listen to music. Resisting the urge to suggest that the AirPods lying on her desk might better serve that purpose, I opted to leave the convo there, further surrendering myself to the idea that I am part of a dying breed who actually cares about the existential privacy invasions presented by a population paying to be walking panopticons.
Despite complaints from women recorded without their knowledge and consent by creeps sporting them—who are then extorted for money when they ask for the published video to be taken down—wearing smart glasses in public is not (yet) being treated like the breach of social contract it inherently is, in or out of doctors offices.

Subject: Fake ChatGPT download site infects Windows and Mac users with malware
Source: Malwarebytes
https://www.malwarebytes.com/blog/threat-intel/2026/05/fake-chatgpt-download-site-infects-windows-and-mac-users-with-malware
A convincing fake website is impersonating OpenAI’s ChatGPT download page and infecting visitors with malware designed to steal passwords, browser data, cryptocurrency wallets, and other sensitive information.
The site, openew[.]app, closely mimics OpenAI’s real ChatGPT download experience and offers what appear to be official desktop apps for both Windows and macOS. Instead, Windows users receive a credential-stealing malware loader, while Mac users get Odyssey Stealer, a fork of Atomic Stealer (AMOS), a well-known macOS malware family associated with cryptocurrency theft.
The dual-platform setup is what makes the operation notable. Clicking the Windows download delivers a fake installer that opens a back channel to an attacker-controlled server. Clicking the macOS button delivers malware that steals browser passwords, cookies, Telegram sessions, cryptocurrency wallets, and other sensitive files. It also attempts to replace legitimate Ledger and Trezor wallet apps with trojanized versions.
If you only download ChatGPT from OpenAI’s official download page or the Microsoft Store, you were not the target here. But if you searched for “ChatGPT download” and clicked an ad or unfamiliar result, you may have given attackers access to your online accounts, browser sessions, saved passwords, and potentially your cryptocurrency holdings.
What to do if you may have installed the fake app – If you recently installed something claiming to be ChatGPT from anywhere other than OpenAI’s official download page or the Microsoft Store, you may have been affected. From a different, clean device:

Subject: Hackers Used Meta’s AI Support Bot to Seize Instagram Accounts
Source: Krebs on Security
https://krebsonsecurity.com/2026/06/hackers-used-metas-ai-support-bot-to-seize-instagram-accounts/
The Instagram accounts for the Obama White House and the Chief Master Sergeant of the U.S. Space Force were briefly defaced with pro-Iranian images and messages over the weekend, after instructions began circulating on Telegram showing how to trick Meta’s “AI support assistant” bot into resetting account passwords.
A video released on Telegram by pro-Iran hackers claimed to document a remarkably simple exploit that appears to have involved using a VPN connection with an IP address that is in or near the target’s usual hometown, requesting a password reset for the account, and then choosing to chat with Meta’s AI support assistant. From there, the video shows the attacker told the bot to link the account in question to a new email address, after which the bot dutifully sent that address a one-time code that allowed a password reset.
“Instagram has notoriously poor human support infrastructure,” Cybersecguru wrote. “Recovering a locked account – especially a high-value one can take weeks of back-and-forth with an automated ticketing system. Meta’s solution was to deploy a conversational AI layer to handle common recovery workflows: relinking a lost email address, triggering a password reset, verifying account ownership. The assistant, presumably, was supposed to reduce friction for legitimate users stuck in account-access hell.”
“AI chatbots create interesting new attack surface, and we’re likely going to see a lot more of these kinds of attacks,” Goldin said.

“The world’s largest advertising conglomerate has proposed merging with the company that has built detailed profiles on every American. A disturbing story at the intersection of innovations in war and our surveillance economy broke last week. Reuters reported on a letter sent by U.S. Central Command to Sen. Ron Wyden (D-OR) back in April, revealing that U.S. military troop locations had been tracked using commercial location data. Such information collected from phones and other connected devices can uncover patterns and movements to inform attacks on military targets. Wyden told Reuters that we need to “start treating the adtech industry as a national security threat.”…

Subject: Trump signs order to vet top AI models for security risks
Source: AP via WTAE
https://www.wtae.com/article/trump-executive-order-ai-models-security-risks/71472345
President Donald Trump signed an executive order on artificial intelligence Tuesday, less than two weeks after postponing a White House ceremony over his concerns that a similar policy could dull America’s edge on AI technology.
The order establishes a framework for the federal government to vet the national security risks of the most advanced AI systems for up to a month before their public release. The government will be able to work with trusted partners “that will have early access to covered frontier models to promote secure innovation and strengthen the cybersecurity of critical infrastructure,” the order says.
It was not immediately clear to what extent the order differed from the one he declined to sign on May 21.

Google has built a new security feature into its Phone app — the default calling app on Android phones — that can detect and warn you about scam calls where someone pretends to be someone you know. Scammers are increasingly using advanced techniques like spoofing phone numbers and using AI to make their voice sound like someone else. When calling from one Android phone to another, a silent, behind-the-scenes, encrypted RCS message confirms that the call is legitimate. But if that message is missing from an incoming call from a known contact, the Phone app silently checks with the phone of that contact. If that phone responds that it’s not currently calling you, a scam alert appears. The feature can only work for contacts that also have Android phones. Google is starting to roll out the feature globally this month, starting with Pixel devices. It will be available on Android versions 12 and newer.
Subject: The European Parliament Ditches Google Search — Qwant Swoops In
Source: Android Headlines
https://www.androidheadlines.com/2026/06/the-european-parliament-ditches-google-search-qwant-swoops-in.html
According to a report from the European Parliament, the institution is set to replace Google as the default search engine on its internal computers with Qwant, a French privacy-focused search engine. The move is part of a broader European push for greater digital sovereignty and reduced dependence on American technology companies.
According to a new report, the European Parliament could ditch Google as its default search engine. This is all a part of the initiative to become less reliant on American tech.
The European Parliament decided to ditch Google Search in favor of Qwant – The European Parliament will allegedly stop using Google as the default search engine on its in-house computers. The information comes from Politico, by the way. Searches made via the address bar on Firefox and Edge will be made via the French alternative Qwant.
Qwant will be the new default search engine starting on June 4, so, tomorrow. Workers will still be able to go to another search engine’s website or change the default search engine, which kind of defeats the purpose of this move, but there you go.
