Prof. Christina Pagel. Professor of Operational Research, Clinical Operational Research Unit. I have a background in both mathematics and physics, with an undergraduate degree in maths and a PhD in space physics. After three years as a post-doctoral physicist in Boston, I decided to make the transition into operational research applied to health care and joined the UCL Clinical Operational Research Unit (CORU) in late 2005. In 2008, I was promoted to the position of Senior Research Fellow and began leading CORU's work on global health. In October 2018 I was promoted to Professor of Operational Research and was Director of CORU from 2017-2022. From 2013-2019, I also spent time as an honorary "researcher in residence" within the critical care units at Great Ormond Street Hospital. From August 2016 - August 2017, I was a Harkness Fellow in Health Policy, based in Boston, USA. Since May 2020, I have been a member of Independent SAGE, providing accessible updates on the national and international Covid-19 situation.

Censor, purge, defund: how Trump is following the authoritarian playbook on science and universities

Professor of Operational Research Christian Pagel has mapped 35 of the Trump administration’s attacks on science and universities to the authoritarian playbook – and considers what it means for attacks still to come. Pagel states that the attacks on science and universities are neither random nor new, and identifies key factors at work – controlling research to serve those in power; undermining independence and suppressing dissent; and attacking work that the Trump roadmap characterizes as having a foundation in neoliberal agendas that undermine national sovereignty and prioritize global elites over local needs.
